What Is Offside in Football?
Offside is one of the most discussed rules in football. This simple guide explains the basic idea and why the rule exists.
The basic idea
A player is generally in an offside position if, at the moment a teammate plays the ball, the player is in the opponents’ half and nearer to the opponents’ goal line than both the ball and the second-last opponent.
Being in an offside position is not automatically an offence
A player is penalised when they become involved in active play from an offside position. Simply standing in an offside position does not by itself mean a foul has happened.
Why the rule exists
The rule helps prevent attackers from simply waiting close to the opponent’s goal for an easy pass. It encourages movement, timing and defensive positioning.
A simple example
If a striker is beyond the second-last defender when a teammate passes the ball forward, the assistant referee may raise the flag if the striker then becomes involved in play. The exact decision depends on the position and involvement at the moment of the pass.
