Fantasy Premier League formations explained

Football Hub • September 2026

Your FPL formation describes how your starting outfield players are arranged between defenders, midfielders and forwards. Your goalkeeper is separate from this formation.

Common formations

Examples include 3-4-3, 3-5-2, 4-4-2, 4-3-3 and 5-3-2. The numbers describe defenders, midfielders and forwards respectively.

Can you change formation?

Yes. Before the gameweek deadline, you can change which players start and which players are on your bench, as long as the resulting team follows the game's formation rules.

Why formations matter

Changing the structure lets you choose different combinations of players for your starting XI. Your choice can depend on the fixtures, player availability and your own FPL strategy.
