Football Formations Explained
A formation describes the basic way a team is organised on the pitch. It can change during a match as players attack and defend.
What is a formation?
A formation groups players by their general roles, such as defenders, midfielders and forwards. Common examples include 4-4-2, 4-3-3 and 3-5-2.
4-4-2
This setup normally uses four defenders, four midfielders and two forwards. It is easy to understand and can provide a balanced shape.
4-3-3
A 4-3-3 normally has four defenders, three midfielders and three forwards. The wide attackers can stretch the opposition while the midfield supports both phases.
3-5-2
A 3-5-2 normally uses three centre-backs, wing-backs, three central midfielders and two forwards. The wing-backs have important attacking and defensive responsibilities.
Formation versus playing style
A formation is only a starting structure. Two teams using the same formation can play very differently depending on their pressing, passing, movement and defensive approach.
